Homestead is a handsome middle-of-the-road cubensis — caramel and tawny caps, often with a slightly deeper centre, sitting on stems thick enough to hold their own. Nothing outlandish, which is rather the point. Homestead is the strain for people who've been round the houses with novelty isolations and fancy a return to something that simply works.
This is the variety that turned me into a strain hunter and ultimately led me to share my genetics online.

Then let us begin… A couple of years back, I was messing around on an underground mushroom cultivation website, and a guy in America had found a magic mushroom cultivation kit in his attic that was over 25 years old! He asked for advice on fruiting the spore prints, took pictures of everything to show what he had. Nobody thought that a 25-year-old spore print would actually fruit, but some people encouraged him to give it a go anyway. There was no strain name, and the box just said Homestead Publishing on it; inside were a few petri dishes, a couple of prints and a how-to guide.
A couple of months later, there were pictures of petri dishes, colonised grain, and an air of anticipation blowing by. Weeks after that, a tub full of golden cubensis. People were asking for spore prints; people were begging for spore prints! I’ll think about it, said the owner of the mushrooms. Silence…
A week later, he had printed up and sampled the mushrooms; a happy and energetic time was had, full of age-old wisdom. He had no variety name; it was voted on to name the variety from the box that it was found in: Homestead. He offered the prints up to the universe; the tiny corner of the universe that I was in went crazy for this!
One day a letter arrived; it contained a print! The rest is history!
Storage: Keep your spores refrigerated, not frozen, from the moment you receive them. Pop them in the fridge straight away, and they’ll happily keep for a couple of months and, in perfect conditions, even for years.
Remember: All our products are sold for microscopy purposes ONLY; do not try to grow mushrooms with any of our products; that would be illegal and very naughty. While I have your attention on this matter, it is very surprising to learn how many naughty people there are out there. No judging, but I cannot answer any questions about growing mushrooms. It doesn’t matter if you live somewhere where growing is legal; I still won’t answer any questions – please don’t ask. However, if you do ask me naughty questions, I will unfortunately have to add you to my banned list, and you will be unable to enjoy any of my lovely products. I will also inform Santa about your naughty behaviour and ask him to put you on his naughty list – that’s now Christmas stuffed. So please, no naughty questions.

Keep the product in a clean and tidy place
