Some strains are showy. This one is showy and stubbornly hard-working. Hillbilly Pumpkin takes the famously scrappy Hillbilly line and dresses it in autumn colours — squat, thick-set fruits with caps in a warm burnt-orange that genuinely earns the name. Set against the usual caramels and chestnuts of the cubensis world, a flush of these looks like someone's decorated the tub for October.

Underneath the colouring, it's pure Hillbilly: fast, rhizomatic mycelium that sprints across a substrate, and a general refusal to be fussed. Hillbilly built its reputation on tolerating conditions that would make a more delicate strain sulk, and the Pumpkin isolation carries that resilience with it. Expect plenty of fruits rather than a handful of giants — this one goes for numbers and density over headline-grabbing individuals.

A little history: the parent Hillbilly strain is generally traced to wild-collected spores from the American South — Arkansas and the surrounding Ozarks are the usual attribution, hence the affectionately backhanded name. The Pumpkin variant came later, out of hobbyist isolation work by growers who spotted an unusually orange phenotype and selected for it over successive generations. Hillbilly was a popular member of a mycology forum and named his strain after himself.

Storage: Keep your spores refrigerated, not frozen, from the moment you receive them. Pop them in the fridge straight away, and they’ll happily keep for a couple of months and in perfect conditions, even for years.

What’s included in the syringe package:

It is best to keep these syringes refrigerated until and after use. Keep them in a sealed container in the dark and all will be well. In a cupboard they will last about six months and kept in the fridge, they will last a year or two – just don’t leave them at the back of the fridge as they can freeze there and the spores do not like to be frozen. It’s that easy.

If you use the syringe and don’t use all the spore solution, just leave the needle connected to the syringe and put the needle cap back on for storage. Remember to put it back into a clean, sealed container. When it comes time to use the syringe again, just clean the needle by heating it up with a lighter or torch until it glows red (making sure all creepy crawlies have been dealt with) and you are good to go.
